Photos around Caz Today

Here are some photos from my stroll around Cazenovia. They show changes underway in and around the historic business district.

Jim:

Thanks for the pictures! They are a bit of a shock, not because of the change, but because these improvements actually look pretty good! The college buildings are quite impressive, although that big thing along Sullivan Street looks a little out of place.

Lamb's former barbershop building is a bit wierd, too, but as you noted, it is taller than it was originally, but only because it had a false fourth floor added on to it long ago, and this has been made into a full functioning floor.

It originally was only three stories with a peaked roof, (you can see a shadow of it on the side), but because snow and ice fell on to the sidewalk the front roof had been raised and a false fourth-floor front with windows was put in to send the drainage to the back. I think it was done not long after 1900.

The building was built by John Murdock, a grocer, in 1826. It was occupied by a barber shop for almost 100 years until Toad moved out a few years ago.

I do think the windows are a bit oversized for the structure, and the roof being flat is just not at all pleasing to the eye, which will drive me nuts to look at it, but at least they didn't knock it down and it clearly being put to use.

I'll miss the little rotten drapes that someone had put up there to make it look better (probably in 1940!)

Hi Jim.
Do you any photos of the Main Street area?
I am interested in seeing the building that once housed the Acme Super Market.
Thank you.
