With Congressman John Murtha calling today for the immediate implementation of a pullout plan for American troops in Iraq, the gravity of public opinion seems to have finally turned the tide against the war there. Here's a quote from an AP article:
Several times a year, Murtha travels to Iraq to assess the war on the ground, and sometimes he just calls up generals to get firsthand accounts. The neocons and corporate toadies who designed, promoted, and profited from this war are finally being seen for what they are, and for the harm they are doing to our honorable troops and to America's standing in the world. His voice cracked and tears filled his eyes as he related stories of one of his visits to wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
One man, he said, was blinded and lost both his hands but had been denied a Purple Heart because friendly fire caused his injuries.
"I met with the commandant. I said, 'If you don't give him a Purple Heart, I'll give him one of mine.' And they gave him a Purple Heart," said Murtha, who has two.
Here is another article that bluntly states the dam has burst. It reviews the current state of public and political opinion on the Iraq war and contains the following quote from Rep. Murtha:
"It is time for a change in direction. Our military is suffering, the future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the US, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf region."What's most amazing about this to me is that Congressman Murtha is not only "hawkish", he has received an award for his unwavering dedication to strong US military backup in the service of Zionist goals (the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs' "Scoop" Jackson award: see here). The same award has been given to architects of the Iraq war, including Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz. Murtha is putting his extensive military and political "hawk" credentials on the line in saying the war is a failure. Posted by jimj at November 17, 2005 08:44 PM | TrackBack
