I can only hope that somebody took the national treasures back to Mexico where they belong. Posted by jimj at November 19, 2005 02:13 PM | TrackBack
Ancient Mayan artifacts stolen from Lebanon homeMadison County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for ancient Mayan artifacts that were stolen from a Lebanon home earlier this week.
“We don’t run into this very often,” Lt. Bill Wilcox said.
According to deputies, 50 Mayan clay figures were taken from a box between Tuesday and Wednesday around the time owners Seymour and Anita Bronstein were at home unpacking boxes. Bronstein, an archeology buff, said he got the figures during digs in Guatemala and the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico in the 1960s and ’70s.
These days, “it’s illegal to take them out of the country,” said Bronstein, a cardiologist from Pennsylvania who moved here recently to work at Bassett Healthcare in Hamilton. “They’re national treasures.”
Deputies have questioned people about the theft, according to the police report, but the investigation is ongoing.
