I think we all feel the pain of higher gas prices. Even if you drive less than ten miles a week (like me), gas prices are reflected in the cost of everything we buy, not just the gasoline we put into our cars and trucks.
So Senate Republicans, in a naked election-year ploy, are hatching a plan to offer cash to all Americans to help them buy gas. A $100 check, in fact.
Sounds great, right? We could all use that extra cash! Except that they are actually offering to WRITE YOU A CHECK TO BUY YOUR COMPLIANCE IN THE PLAN TO DRILL FOR OIL IN THE ALASKA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE (ANWR)!!
That's right, Americans are about to be bribed by Ted Stevens, the Alaska senator who has proposed the $100 rebate along with Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. Santorum's reelection bid faces serious hurdles because of his support for an extreme right-wing agenda, so he's signed on to a shameless ploy to shower the American people with $100 checks instead of addressing our oil-dependence issue and the seeming fact that energy companies are gouging consumers.
And Stevens, of Alaska, is the king of pork - with his bridge to nowhere and his incessant (and repeatedly failing) efforts to promote ANWR drilling.
