County Sales Tax Redistribution Proposal Called "Unfair" to Cazenovia

The Madison County Board of Supervisors is in "preliminary discussions" of a plan to redistribute the county's $9.5 million in sales tax revenue. The plan under consideration would allocate the revenue to towns based on their populations rather than their assessed property values. This would mean the loss of about $1 million from Cazenovia's town budget - money that would benefit smaller towns such as Brookfield and Smithfield. The result, according to Cazenovia town board member Kristi Andersen, would likely be an increase in property taxes that would hurt town residents on fixed incomes.
