Madison County Votes Raises For Employees, Over Cazenovia's (and Others') Objections

The Post-Standard reports that department heads and managers employed by Madison County will receive automatic pay increases. While supervisors supporting the plan say that it provides smaller raises than those in the original budget, Cazenovia supervisor Liz Moran was opposed to the idea, saying, "This is getting out of step with what's happening with private-sector employees. We have a responsibility to taxpayers who are not seeing their salaries and benefits increased to this amount." Many board members opposed to the salary increases would like to see raises based on performance evaluations, with only the highest-evaluated employees receiving more money - a system known as merit-based pay. The debate over merit-based pay has become a hot topic with the board.
