"An Inconvenient Truth" To Show at Cazenovia College Theatre

Film is Part of College and Community Environmental Discussions

From Cazenovia College:

“An Inconvenient Truth,” Al Gore’s acclaimed documentary on global warming, will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., in the Cazenovia College Theatre on Lincklaen Street in Cazenovia. After the film there will be a panel discussion by Cazenovia College students, faculty and other knowledgeable persons, moderated by Rhea Jezer, Senior Lecturer of Environmental Sciences at Cazenovia College. The event is free and open to the public.

The presentation is offered in conjunction with the required reading and topic of discussion for all students in the College’s First Year Seminars and the Cazenovia Public Library’s “Community Read.” It is sponsored by Cazenovia College’s First Year Program Committee, Interfaith Committee, and the Cazenovia Public Library, with assistance from New York Interfaith Power & Light, part of a national network of congregations affiliated with The Regeneration Project (on the Internet at http://www.theregenerationproject.org).

Dr. Timothy McLaughlin, professor of History and director of the First Year Program, said, “Each year our first year students have a summer reading assignment based on the theme of discussions planned for their seminars. This year’s reading is “Field Notes from A Catastrophe: Man, Nature and Climate Change,” by Elizabeth Kolbert. Planned activities for the seminar classes are centered on Kolbert’s subject: our environment.”

Steve Young, director of Cazenovia College’s Inter-Faith Office, was instrumental in bringing the film to the Cazenovia College Theatre. He said, “The film has been made available at no cost to the College, through New York Interfaith Power & Light, a group that promotes ‘faithful and just stewardship of God’s creation through energy conservation, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy.’”

Dr. Rhea Jezer, a senior lecturer at Cazenovia College, serves on the board of directors for New York Interfaith Power & Light, and will be moderator of the “An Inconvenient Truth” programming. In addition to her many roles in the Syracuse religious, educational and political community, Jezer is an environmental advisor to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, is a member of the Board of Directors of the NYS League of Conservation Voters, and serves on the Executive Council of the Interreligious Council of Central New York. She helped Gov. Pataki coordinate efforts to pass the 1996 Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act, and served on the Governor’s Superfund Reauthorization Working Group. She also chairs the Cazenovia College "Symposium on Energy in the 21st Century" each spring.
