Plans Presented, Opposition Aired

Last night, the Cazenovia community turned out to hear a request from Pioneer development, landowner Ralph Stowell, and the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation for annexation of property on US Route 20 to the village of Cazenovia. The owners and developer have proposed a mixed-use shopping and retail area with a total of 80,000 square feet of commercial space, the largest single building of which would be a single-story 37,000 square foot Price Chopper supermarket.

According to the article, opposition to the plan was strong, with many residents feeling the area should remain rural in use and appearance, and one resident suggesting that public bonds be used to purchase the property and retain it as open space.

Annexation is the critical question at this stage, since annexation of the property into the village would allow the owners and developer to avoid a Route 20 development moratorium that has been imposed by the Town of Cazenovia.

Residents have until Tuesday (November 21) to submit their comments on the annexation to the town and village.

Also requesting annexation of a different property is Muraco, which plans to renovate the property currently occupied by the Cazenovia Motel and Cazenovia's Country Kitchen, adding dozens of "extended stay" motel rooms, a bank, and a drugstore.
