Voters Overwhelmingly Defeat School Spending Proposals

By a margin of more than 2-to-1, voters in the Cazenovia Central Schools district defeated spending proposals for capital improvements to facilities, buildings, and athletic fields. Here's the summary of the story from tonight's "Post-Standard Extra" at Syracuse.com:

Cazenovia voters defeat school projects; largest turnout in at least 20 years

Cazenovia voters soundly defeated both capital project proposals up for referendum today, rejecting artificial turf and stadium-style lighting.

Voters headed to the polls in record numbers to cast their ballots against the $13 million worth of work, which also included for renovations to school gyms, roofs, heating systems and driveways as well as creating new ballfields on Fenner Road.

The proposition for lights, at $360,000, was defeated by a vote of 1,902 to 878. The other proposition, at $12.64 million to cover everything else, was defeated by a vote of 1,876[*] to 936.

Those vote totals are the highest in at least 20 years, according to school records and newspaper archives. By late afternoon, the line of voters snaked out of the high school gym and main lobby and onto the front portico.

Superintendent Bob Dubik said the school board plans to discuss its options for renovating the schools at Monday’s regular board meeting.
