Cazenovia, N.Y. – Cazenovia College’s Laboratory Nursery School has completed the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Program Registration, a process that requires extensive oversight of the school and annual reports about the facility, personnel and records. For non-public nursery schools and kindergartens, this achievement is voluntary, while public schools in New York State are regulated by the NYSED.
Mary Cross, director of the Laboratory Nursery School said, “In order for a nursery school program to be registered with the department, it must demonstrate that the curriculum it offers provides appropriate learning opportunities for children to gain the relevant competencies and skills as identified in the New York State Learning Standards for preschool education.”
Cazenovia College’s Laboratory Nursery School program includes morning and afternoon sessions for a total of about 40 children during the College’s fall and spring semesters. Students in the College’s education programs put their classroom skills to use under the supervision of professional staff in planning and carrying out lessons and activities at the Nursery School.
Registration assures that the school meets the expectations set by the New York State Board of Regents in English language arts, math, science, social studies, the arts, and physical education for young children in response to federal mandates regarding education.
The program’s teachers must meet specific education and experience qualifications, and must participate in on-going professional development. Guidelines for health and safety practices, as well as appropriate communication with parents and guardians are also included in the comprehensive standards of quality defined by the NYSED.
