Benazir Bhutto Assassinated

Pakistani opposition leader, and former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated today after a campaign rally in Rawalpindi. Bhutto's supporters are already claiming that the government of U.S. puppet and current prime minister (and until recently, army chief) Pervez Musharraf is responsible for her death.

Bhutto had only recently returned to Pakistan after years of exile to support a democratic process and help lead opposition to Musharraf's dictatorial and military rule. Her return was swiftly followed by the implementation of martial law and many wondered whether she could possibly be safe; obviously, she was not.

Bhutto was known as an advocate for the poor and working classes in Pakistan, carrying on the legacy of her father Shah Nawaz Bhutto... who was hanged in 1979 by the military government that overthrew him in 1977.

This is a tragic outcome to what had seemed a hopeful process; Pakistan will undoubtedly be thrown into emotional and political turmoil for months if not years.
