Brewster Inn chefs win Iron Fork

via syracuse.com

By Don Cazentre / The Post-Standard

The team from the Brewster Inn in Cazenovia took the top prize Sunday at Iron Fork Syracuse,a competition at Syracuse University’s Schine Student Center that pitted 12 teams of chefs in a high energy,fast-paced test of culinary skill. The event was based on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef” series, and included celebrity chef and Cazenovia native Anne Burrell as one of the judges.

The Brewster Inn’s team — executive chef Jason Wright, and chefs Stephen Franks and David France — took the honors in a contest in which judges gave scores on flavor, presentation, creativity and use of the day’s “secret” ingredient, which was fennel. Their dishes included braised leg of lamb served over chevre and fennel ravioli in a brown remoulade;and scallops ceviche with a citrus vinaigrette (made with fennel fronds and fennel pollen). They also served a fennel sherbet.

Second place went to the team from Sysco Syracuse,a food supplier, and third place went to The Century Club of Syracuse.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Rescue Mission.

Caz school district examines declining enrollment | Cazenovia Republican.

Strong article on declining enrollment in the Cazenovia Central Schools school district. Few young families are having children in the district, and few families are moving in.

My two cents:I don’t want to see real estate values decline, but I have seen a lot of houses on the market for a very long time that would be perfect for young families, but they are priced way above what a young family can afford. I wonder if more realistic listing prices by sellers would help.

By Alaina Potrikus / The Post-Standard

Cazenovia resident Bob Rose was preparing for an ice-climbing trip in 2005 when he created an energy bar in his own kitchen using a blend of spices to help him stay warm.

After retiring as a commercial pilot in 2007,Rose started working full time on turning his brainstorm into a marketable product:testing recipes using food scientists, bringing in business mentors and finding manufacturers, distributors and private investors.

Today, his Thermal Bar is sold at 68 Eastern Mountain Sports stores across the country, including the ones at Carousel Center and Fayetteville’s Towne Center.

Marketed as “the heat you eat,” the energy bar includes healthy ingredients to enhance circulation and is designed for outdoor enthusiasts as well as people who work outside during the winter months.
Creating a marketable recipe from the idea he cooked up in his kitchen wasn’t an easy process,Rose said. Continue reading Cazenovia entrepreneur cooks up a success with “Thermal Bars”

Town land annexed into village

By Pierce Smith

Cazenovia — The village of Cazenovia just got a little larger.

During the Nov. 7 village board meeting,a resolution was passed by both the village and town approving the annexation of 13.452 acres of land as village property.

Following a public hearing and completion of a SEQR form for a Type I Action,it was determined there would be no negative environmental impacts.

As the lead agency, the village passed the resolution first and immediately contacted the town board with their decision.

Minutes later, town councilors approved the resolution, making the transaction official. Continue reading Town land annexed into village
