Here’s another article on the efforts to bring a mixed-use building to the site of the old town highway garage, on Riverside Drive in the village of Cazenovia. See the linked article for full coverage of the events of the December 7 village board meeting.
A committee of local officials and residents spent two years determining criteria for an ideal Riverside Drive property development. Trustee Peggy Van Arnam read the criteria at the board meeting: Neighborhood heritage, connectivity to the village (especially to Albany Street), natural resource utilization (i.e. a creek walk), parking, a mixed-use facility, coexistence with the library and with neighbors and improvement of the economy by adding to the tax base. Van Arnam praised the committee for their hard work.

Overhead walk way? Naw, you’re thinking too small. I propose that Albany St. be tunneled underground through the village, thus creating a public space perfect for open air markets, public music performance, etc.
..now to secure the funding….
I can only imagine what this “committee” was doing for two years to come up with a plan that a bunch of regular folks could have hashed out in 10 minutes or so at a bull session in a coffee shop or around a cracker barrel. Sounds like there might be some agendas or vested interests involved. No, say it isn’t so in Cazenovia.
If Mr Colligan were amenable I would purchase his business and the old NAPA bldg. and raze them. In their place I would constuct an architecturally pleasing 3 story building that would complement the adjacent structures. The first floor of the building would be an upscale market with meats, fish, poultry, fresh produce and maybe a deli. The second floor would be groceries and staple foods. The second floor would be easily accessible because of the forward thinking architects who designed it. The 3rd floor would be store offices and or rental office space. Kind of like a mini Wegmans. Just think how nice that would be!
NO PARKING you say? Ok how about we raze the old pepi’s pizza bldg. and put in a multi level parking garage. WHAT! in Cazenovia you exclaim. Not to worry those architects are clever people. I say that an architecturally pleasing structure could be designed with indoor parking on multiple levels.
How do all those folks cross traffic on Rt 20 to get from the garage to the market? I suggest an overhead walkway between the two. I would further suggest the overhead walkway be modeled after a covered RR bridge to make it a landmark and tourist attraction. Alternately an understreet crossing could be used.
