Ron Cary, Madison County’s sheriff since 1991, is retiring to spend more time with his family and to teach at Morrisville State and Cazenovia College. His replacement will be elected in the November 2009 general election.

Apparently a Syracuse-based hauler has been removing trash it picks up in Madison County to other (non-county) dump sites, in violation of county law designed to ensure hauling/dumping fees pay for local hazmat and recycling programs.

In another unfortunate reflection of the current economic climate, power utility National Grid is asking for a refund after it overpaid Cazenovia and other municipalities for an estimated tax. Sales tax revenues are declining, meaning the village has even less money to address possible funding shortfalls.
